Making Healthy Changes in the New Year

A new year is a time to evaluate your lifestyle, and make some small changes towards a healthier way of living. Here are 10 things seniors can do in the new year that will benefit all aspects of their life!

1. Eat Healthier: Aging adults still need the nutrition packed in fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins. Try for the usual 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, but also fiber-rich brown rice and grains. For protein, go lighter on the fat with chicken, turkey, or fish.

2. Take a Vitamin: One a day could really keep the doctor away! But be sure to check with your physician first to find out what kinds of supplements you need.

3. Get Active: Try walking, water aerobics, or stretching to not only help with weight, but with balance, muscle strength, and mood!

4. See Your Doctor: Regular check ups are a good way to stay healthy. Make sure you're asking about which screenings you need.

5. Drink Less: Alcohol can interfere with medications, cause depression, or make sleeping difficult.

6. Watch for Fall Hazards: Eliminate trip hazards in your home, like rugs or clutter. Exercise can also help with your balance and stability.

7. Exercise Your Brain: Keep your mental activity up by reading books, doing puzzles, or get in on a group discussion.

8. Quit Smoking: It's never to late to quit! Have more energy, and feel better, by quitting the habit.

9. Feeling Blue? Tell Someone!: Don't keep feelings of anxiety or depression to yourself. Get help, by telling a family member or doctor.

10. Get More Sleep: Aging adults still need 7-8 hours of nightly sleep. Try not to nap during the day, for better sleep at night.
